It’s an uncomfortable truth
Although I’d previously seen poverty on the news and in YouTube videos, nothing prepared me for the shock of seeing it in person for the first time.
I was walking around a neighborhood in the city of Bangkok. People recognized me as a “wealthy westerner” and frequently asked if I had any money to spare. I didn’t. Back then, I only had a few hundred dollars to my name and needed every cent to sustain my lifestyle. But from their perspective, a few hundred dollars was more than enough to put food on the table and pay rent for a very long time.
Those few hours on the streets of Bangkok changed my life forever. They gave me an entirely new perspective on life by helping me to realize that I’m extremely fortunate compared to the vast majority of people worldwide.
You’re probably fortunate, as well.
Sure, your life might not be perfect. You may not live in a great neighborhood or own the latest iPhone. But when you put everything into perspective, none of that matters. In comparison to the global population, you’re incredibly privileged in one way or another.
